Compass Tips & Tricks
It is said that if students can spend 60-90 minutes per week per subject in Compass, you could see growth by up to 2 RIT bands. With that said, the goal is a Goal Strand folder completion, so students need to stay in one folder, until they complete all the activities. ~ from our NWEA / Compass training , May 2014
Choose a student's lowest RIT folder OR a low Foundational Skill folder (ie: Math Operations before Geometry)
Know that activities in a student's learning path correlates with the middle level of the NWEA Descartes or Learning Continuum, therefore, that means that students are able to succeed at about a 50% correct rate (develop column). Students may need some teacher assistance to fully grasp concepts.
Students should learn to look at their Portfolio and self-assess their work. They should know that any activity below the teacher's expectation (of 70-80%) should be re-done for a better score.
I believe that students should take notes when doing Compass. There are times when I believe it is very difficult to score well on the Quiz portion of Compass if some of the new information is not noted to refer back to.
